First Quarter 2026: The Needle Has Moved

A reflective review of the first quarter of 2026, covering my move to GPS, Hong Kong admission, writing plans, website fixes, and how the first three months in my new career have actually gone.

Wow, three months, the first quarter of 2026 already over, and we are nearly halfway through April already!

As I come to the end of the month, I like to do my customary end of month review, but with the end of the quarter it will also be nice to do a review of the first three months of 2026 and my first three months in my new career.

It feels like not much has really happened in the grand scheme of things, especially if I look at my goals for the year. But then if I just pause, take a beat, and reflect, the needle has actually moved quite significantly. At the same time not everything I wanted to achieve at this stage has happened. But this gives me a chance to re-evaluate my goals for the year and re-calibrate.

The Highlights

So what has happened? I’ve already written about most, but the highlights would be joining GPS Legal LLP, getting admitted in HK and working with Altura Governance.

Transitioning from being an offshore lawyer in a big firm to become an HK lawyer in an independent firm was always going to be a big change, but even in these early days, I do feel it is the right choice.

GPS has a platform which I believe allows me to provide much more value to clients in HK and beyond, more so than I was able to do before. It allows me to service a type of client I wasn’t able to before and have the independence to choose the types of work I want to be involved in.

I have already taken onboard a variety of clients and been involved in a range of transactions. There is a learning curve for sure. But that is to be expected.

Writing and Content

I have continued to write, again focusing on a mix of authority and personal reflections. Since I have gotten busy this has slowed down a bit, and hasn’t been consistent. I am however doing it when I can, and remain committed. I keep on meeting people who are actually reading what I have been writing. They have been enjoying the journey and have encouraged me to carry on, especially as I am doing it on my own terms.

Two things I want to focus on in writing for the next 3 months are more longform guides and authority writing for GPS and Altura. I have lots of ideas for guides, that I just need to spend time sitting down and doing. For authority posts, these would be specific to the companies I am associated with, these posts have a dual purpose. They help me to upskill and help build that firm’s authority. This may result in less frequent writing on the website, as the other forms of content just take much longer.

Website and Technical Improvements

The other area I want to focus on is sorting out my website. It has been neglected a bit recently and I think it needs some attention. I’ve never really worried about site performance, as I’m not in it for the numbers. However there are some technical issues that do need addressing. Again this is an upskill for me, as I’ll be learning on the job about how to fix some of the technical problems.

Business Development

I also want to spend the next few months on actually getting out meeting more people, attending events and trying to build my business. The first three months were about settling in, sorting out admin and getting familiar with working again. Now it’s time to actually get business in this new model.

Easter Break and Reset

I am only just posting this, nearly two weeks into April because I was away for Easter.

During this period, it was family time and switch off time from my phone and computer. I made the decision to leave both devices in the safe for the majority of the holiday. For the most part this was achieved. It helps that, unlike previous years I don’t have to constantly monitor work emails and do daily inbox checks.

It was also great to just completely disconnect and focus on family time. There was lots of pool time with the kids and just enjoying walking on the beach.

I am coming into April with a much needed rest. 2026 started off with a bang. My mind and body needed to catch up. I have now had a proper break. I am rested, recharged and raring to go.
